National Popular Vote Bill Endorsed by GOP Leaders

Effort backed by Speakers, Senate Majority Leaders and GOP Chairs

LANSING (March 1, 2023) – The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact was endorsed Wednesday by a group of prominent Michigan Republican leaders, including two former speakers of the House, four former Senate majority leaders and two former state Republican chairmen.

The bipartisan legislation, which was introduced in the Legislature, would see Michigan joining with other states to award their Electoral College votes to the presidential candidate who receives the most votes in all 50 states.

“The compact does not abolish, alter, or amend the Electoral College,” the group of Republican leaders said in a letter to legislators. “Those who claim otherwise are either uniformed or deliberately politicizing this simple, logical nonpartisan reform that makes every voter in every state relevant.”

Among the letter’s signatories were former Speakers of the House Kevin Cotter and Chuck Perricone; former Senate Majority Leaders Mike Bishop, Dick Posthumus, Randy Richardville and Ken Sikkema; and former Michigan Republican Party chairmen Saul Anuzis and Laura Cox. Other signers included former Sens. Mike Green and Phil Pavlov.

“By enacting the compact, the Legislature ensures that the impact of each and every vote cast here in Michigan equals that of any and all votes cast in every other state in presidential elections,” the letter said. “Importantly, this guarantees a truly national election to elect the president of the United States and not the president of the battleground states.”
